Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative Jack Bergman (R-MI), Chairman of the Intelligence and Special Operations Subcommittee, emphasized the critical role of U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. special operations forces during a recent hearing in Washington.

In his opening statement, Rep. Bergman welcomed Assistant Secretary Christopher Maier, General Bryan Fenton, and other subcommittee members to the hearing focused on the challenges and priorities of the Special Operations community. He highlighted the importance of aligning these forces with the National Defense Strategy and addressing the operational and fiscal obstacles they face.

While discussing the evolving security landscape, Rep. Bergman acknowledged the persistent threats in the Middle East and the continued need for Special Operations forces to combat terrorism, extremist organizations, and proxy threats. He emphasized the vital role these elite forces play in maintaining national security amidst shifting priorities towards Great Power Competition.

Contrary to misconceptions, Rep. Bergman stressed that the Special Operations Community is as essential as ever, with increasing demands and responsibilities. Expressing concern over flat funding for USSOCOM, he underscored the effectiveness and efficiency of investing in Special Operations, noting their significant impact despite limited budget allocation.

Highlighting the cost-effectiveness and strategic value of Special Operations forces, Rep. Bergman urged for prioritized resourcing to maximize their contributions in shaping global competition and conflict resolution. He emphasized the importance of leveraging the capabilities of these forces to ensure the U.S. remains competitive in the realm of Great Power Competition.
