U.S. Representative Mike Rogers (R-AL), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, recently addressed national security challenges in North and South America during a hearing. Rogers emphasized various concerns during his opening statement.

Rogers began by stating, "Today we begin our fiscal year 2025 posture hearings with NORTHCOM and SOUTHCOM." He highlighted China's increasing influence in the region, specifically mentioning a new $3.6 billion mega port in Peru financed and operated by Chinese entities. Rogers expressed concerns about China's efforts to diminish American influence in the Americas, stating, "This is just the latest in China’s effort to displace American influence and build a strategic footprint in our backyard."

Acknowledging multiple threats, Rogers mentioned, "Unfortunately, China is not the only malign influence in the Western Hemisphere." He emphasized the importance of promoting stability in the region and addressing security challenges posed by transnational criminal organizations. Rogers pointed out the significant number of migrants attempting to cross the southwest border illegally and the role of criminal groups in drug smuggling activities.

Rogers also raised concerns about the need for border security, stating, "Nearly 3,000 military personnel are deployed to the U.S. border - the largest U.S. deployment of forces in the western hemisphere." He called for decisive action from the President to secure the border and address the ongoing crisis.

In conclusion, Rogers expressed his eagerness to hear from witnesses and receive military advice on overcoming the security challenges faced in the Americas.
