Chairman Mike Rogers, along with Rep. Mike Waltz, Rep. Jim Banks, and Rep. Don Bacon, raised concerns about the deplorable conditions in military barracks. They highlighted issues such as sewage overflows, gas leaks, mold, brown tap water, extreme temperatures, and pest infestations that servicemembers have had to endure.

In response to the distressing findings, Chairman Rogers and his colleagues from the House Armed Services Committee have taken action to address the substandard housing conditions faced by military personnel. They emphasized the urgency of improving the quality of life for servicemembers living in barracks and committed to holding the Department of Defense (DOD) accountable for maintaining and upgrading military housing.

"We will continue to force the DOD to raise the quality of living conditions for servicemembers until we are satisfied," stated the representatives. They expressed disappointment in the underfunding of military housing modernization and improvements, vowing to challenge the president's budget requests that neglect the critical infrastructure upkeep necessary for military readiness.

The deteriorating state of military housing has not only impacted readiness and retention efforts but has also contributed to the Pentagon's recruiting crisis. The representatives emphasized the importance of remedying these housing problems to attract and retain talented individuals in the armed forces.

As part of their oversight responsibilities, Chairman Rogers and his colleagues are actively identifying and addressing hazardous conditions in barracks to ensure the safety and well-being of servicemembers. They have authorized funding for building and renovating barracks above President Biden's budget request and are working towards establishing minimum safety standards for military barracks.

The representatives are dedicated to improving the quality of life for servicemembers and military families, recognizing their crucial role in maintaining national security. They stressed the significance of providing safe and livable housing for those who selflessly serve the nation.
